This weekend we drove to San Diego to explore the city and its surroundings and remained very impressed with the architecture. I actually had a serious architectural crush – the Salk Institute of La Jolla designed by Louis Kahn.
I instantly felt that this architectural masterpiece is the right location to shoot my H&M Conscious Exclusive Silk Jacquard Coat look because for me both the Salk Institute and the H&M Conscious Exclusive Collection have a similar narrative behind their design.
Kahn was commissioned to design the Salk Institute in 1959 by Dr. Jonas Salk, inventor of the polio vaccine, who imagined the facility with an inspiring environment for scientific research. Before designing, Kahn referenced and studied monasteries in order to build his concept of an “intellectual retreat.” He believed buildings should be monumental and spiritually inspiring.
I find it very interesting that Khan looked into the past to construct a building in the present which will inspire and drive progress and future change. The idea behind H&M Conscious Exclusive Collection is very similar – taking clues from 300 years of fashion, this collection totally breaks the stigma that eco-friendly clothing can’t look good, and registers as a nuanced experiment in addressing past and future.
Created in collaboration with Paris Musées des Arts Décoratifs, the collection takes inspiration from costume archives, but is designed using solely sustainable materials such as organic silk, linen and cotton, recycled polyester and lyocell, making it one of H&M’s greenest collections ever. For the first time, even beads and sequins are recycled.
The most elaborate and fashionable sustainable collection so far, it aims to shift consumers away from the mind-set of disposable fashion, reconsider recycled materials and feel the fashion history in garments.
The H&M Conscious Exclusive Collection is not available everywhere, so I guess not everyone had seen it. Honestly, when I stormed into the store I almost stopped breathing when I saw (now mine) H&M Conscious Exclusive Silk Jacquard Coat! I could not believe this piece of art was produced out of recycled Mulberry Silk and recycled Polyester blend and has an H&M tag.
I was totally seduced by teal and bronze colors and the texture of the beautiful jacquard fabric. Also, the cut of the coat is very unique – have you noticed those beautiful splits and low pockets on the sides?
My favorite thing about the Conscious Exclusive Silk Jacquard Coat is that it is also very timeless, which is what sustainable fashion meant to be about. This piece retailed at 249 USD before tax which is very expensive for H&M, but on a larger scale of fashion retail this gorgeous silk jacquard coat is such a fantastic investment for a bold piece that will never go out of style.
